Heal

The HEAL (Healthcare Excellence and Leadership) Awards recognise excellence in the public healthcare sector. This year there were 8 awards, which were voted for by healthcare professionals, patients and the public at large:

Below are a selection of images of the winners accepting their awards. We would like to take this opportunity once again to both congratulate and thank them for all the work they have done, and will continue to do for us, as part of the NHS.

  • Kathy Johnson was a most deserving winner - she goes above and beyond the call of duty for so many women and babies - without a moan - she gives love and care to all she meets - honour to know her. Lynn.

  • The HEAL awards do not cost the NHS a penny! They are financed independently by sponsors who are keen on rewarding NHS staff. Indeed, if it comes to wastage of public money, I could point my finger in certain directions…

  • What a lovely evening that was, it is necessary in the midst of all the hard work, cuts and doom and gloom to take time out to celebrate all the hard work of the NHS. WEll DONE!!

  • A shame that the Ambulance service only received a passing motion despite the fact they are working under ever increasing pressure with less real funding. Maybe it's because the awards were sponsored by suppliers of hospital equipment? Can't remember last time they installed a goods lift in an ambulance!

  • Kathy Johnson was my midwife and came into work on her day off to give me continuity of care. We are so glad that she won a cruise (hopefully it will make up for being so tired that day)

  • But Davy boy is a 'dr' according to wikipedia 'Nicholson was awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2004 New Years Honours list, and received the honorary award of Doctor of the University from the University of Central England, Birmingham. He was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) in the 2010 New Year Honours'

  • Communist Party of Great Britain WTF!!! Communism failed across the world as did 'Care in the Community' 2 epic fails!!
    Nick Randall | 21 November 2010
  • FROM WIKIPEDIA: Nicholson joined the NHS on graduation, and then the Communist Party of Great Britain. He remained a member of the CPGB until 1983. For 10 years he worked in mental health, mainly in Yorkshire, where he was involved in implementing the policy of closing the old asylums and developing care in the community services. SO HE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS EPIC FAIL: care in the community

  • The coalition should kick Sir David into touch but they probably will not as the compensation pay out to him will be huge. He graduates in history and politics and becomes head of the NHS hmmmmmmmmmmmmm I wonder what nurses, midwives and doctors make of this?
    Nick Randall | 21 November 2010
  • @Disgusted Nurse. 'Sir' David Nicholson 'KCB CBE', the Department of Health and the NHS have nothing to do with the HEAL Awards. It is for this reason that the HEAL Awards have proved to be meaningful to NHS frontline staff.

  • FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH WEBSITE: "Sir David Nicholson KCB CBE has been Chief Executive of the National Health Service (NHS) in England since September 2006. He was awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2004 New Years Honours. He was awarded a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) in the 2010 New Years Honours." FROM THE PUBLIC AND NHS EMPLOYEES: Sir David Nicholson KCB CBE has NO medical qualifications (graduated from Bristol University with a 2:1 in History and Politics) and 'he gets a ?37,600-a-year allowance for working away from home on top of his ?215,000 salary for his London based job' (Wikipedia).

  • wonderful, wonderful, wonderful heal awards and even more special because nhs 'mandarins' had no part to play for once. at the next heal awards lets have a sarcastic award for nhs fatcat of the year. i will always support the heal awards because they are a private sector initiative.

  • Best wishes to all the staff in the NHS. You 'heal' the nation and make us proud to be British!
    Nick Randall | 21 November 2010
  • I am very proud that Bedford has been voted ‘cleanest hospital’ and can assure those who pledged their support to us that we will continue to work hard to maintain our high standards. This award is a real tribute to the commitment of all our staff, but particularly those unsung heroes of the hospital – our cleaning teams – who work so hard to ensure we deliver a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene in every part of the hospital. We know we can never afford to become complacent about cleanliness and hygiene and we are committed to continuing to improve. We always welcome feedback from patients and visitors and are pleased to have excellent relationships with patient groups including MRSA Action UK, who kindly nominated us for this award.
Eiri Jones, Director of Nursing & Patient Services, Bedford Hospital | 21 November 2010
  • It is an honour to receive the 'Pioneering in Health' award – we would like to thank our colleagues at King’s for believing in us and giving us the opportunity to develop ourselves. Most importantly, a big thank you goes out to our patients who have supported and trusted us to carry out the procedure.
Elaine Bowes, Senior Sister, King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust | 21 November 2010
  • I am delighted that Poole Hospital has received this unique award (Best Patient Experience Award), especially as it has been voted for by members of the public and healthcare professionals. Patient experience and the quality of care are very important to us at Poole Hospital. It is a great honour to be recognised in this way and a fitting tribute to our dedicated staff who work so hard to put patients at the centre of everything we do.
Chris Bown, Chief Executive, Poole Hospital | 21 November 2010
  • It is heartening to see so many improvements in healthcare and a concerted effort being made to prevent infections, excellence and leadership should be rewarded and recognised, the efforts of all the staff on the frontline are appreciated and this is an opportunity for those hospitals who are performing well to share good practice and experience with others.
Derek Butler, Chairman, MRSA Action UK | 21 November 2010
  • I feel super. We never expected to win because with psychiatry, you’re working on something you can’t touch or can’t measure very well, so for us to win it’s so nice.
Dr Christine Ecker, Institute of Psychiatry (IoP), King’s College London | 21 November 2010
  • We are pleased that this award for 'Innovation of the Year' recognises the clinical benefits of the innovative work that the IoP has pioneered. Our aim, together, is to pioneer more accurate, safe, and cost effective health innovations that meet the needs of service users and lead to more effective individualised diagnostic and treatment approaches.
Professor Declan Murphy, Institute of Psychiatry (IoP), King’s College London | 21 November 2010
  • @Mr Marcus Cope @Lesley Burton. The Heal Awards cost Trusts and UK tax payers nothing. The Heal Awards are paid for by sponsors and winners are voted for by the public and healthcare employees. Cannot blame you for your comments as the type of awards you are referring to are dispised by nhs employees as they are junkets costing millions paid for by the department of health.

  • The tall black girl promoting the nurses discount card was a right smasher. Corrrr!!!
    Roger Barrat | 19 November 2010
  • It was a really lovely night and a wonderful event. who cares that it was independent of the nhs anyway? the frontline nhs staff, patients and the private sector came together to say thank you to doctors, nurses etc and not a department of health fatcat in sight! well done heal awards!!
    Ali Haffez | 19 November 2010
  • jUDGING BY THE NAMES OF SPONSERS ADVERTISED IT PROBABLE DOES NOT COST THE NHS ANY MONEIS . iTS ABOUT TIME WE CELABRATES THE GREAT PEOPLE WE WORK ALONG SIDE AND SHOWED A UNITED POSITIVE RESPONSE TO INSTIL PUBLLIC CONFIDENCE IN THESE DIFFICULT ECONAMICAL TIMES. CHEER UP AND ENJOY !
    LISA MANCHIPP-TAYLOR | 19 November 2010
  • How much is all this costing when trusts throughout the country have to fight for every penny !!
    Lesley Burton | 18 November 2010
  • What a waste of UK tax payers money.
