This is what a colleague had to say about Nichola Blanco and the exceptional work that she does for the NHS.
Nichola Blanco is the Cancer Screening Coordinator for NHS Bromley, I have nominated her for the dedication she has shown in her current work; promoting the cancer screening programmes in Bromley and across the south east London Sector.
By background Nichola is a paramedic. She was very involved in the 7/7 bombings at Tavistock Square and although she continued to work as a paramedic after this event, the effect it had on her meant she needed to take some time out to recuperate. She decided to do something different and applied for a secondment from her ambulance station in Camden, to work in the flu response centre in London during the pandemic. From there she was seconded to work with the flu programme in NHS Bromley, south east London.
Following this, she was asked if she would continue her secondment and work in Public Health for the cancer screening programme and taking on the role of coordinator. Even though this was completely out of her comfort zone, she accepted to do the job and has shown incredible diligence in learning this new work; which is desk bound and alien to her previously physical job. She even went into further unknown territory and bid successfully for over £275,000 towards a special promotion; something she has not done before! She travels 1.5 hours from her north London home to her workplace in Bromley and another 1.5 hours back to her home without a grumble; walking, taking 2 buses, a tube and a train, in all weathers! Her dedication to her work and her keeness and enthusiasm to learn is amazing to observe. She is full of fun, loud and bubbly (typical paramedic material) but at the same time has a wonderful quiet and serious side to her character which has enabled her to fit into this sensitive programme with apparent ease. She works tirelessly to achieve its aims and is always searching for that one little hidden gem of information which she can include in the programme that will assist in increasing public knowledge and their understanding of the need for taking up screening.
Her work is behind the scenes, and it does not have a public face when compared with her usual work of being in the forefront of emergencies; but her enthusiam and dedication has not diminished despite the change and therefore, I believe, she is worthy of being employee of the month.
